Times Square is a well-known destination in New York City. It is dotted with numerous billboards, Broadway theatres, and vibrant, animated neon and LED displays that are always on. Times Square is filled with numerous attractions, including stores, eateries, TV studios, parties for New Year’s Eve, and a huge throng of people. One of New York’s most well-known attractions is Broadway, which is known for its theatres, as well as the vast amount of animated neon and television-style signage. Times Square is located in the Manhattan borough at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretches from West 42nd Street to West 47th Street. From Sixth to Eight Avenue is the Theatre District, which is a part of Times Square. The Theatre District is home to a variety of theatres, movie theatres, nightclubs, dining establishments, gift stores, and pubs. Times Square serves as a promotional platform for a number of significant international businesses. At Times Square, there are billboard advertisements for significant international brands like Coca-Cola, Toshiba, Panasonic, and Samsung. In 1904, Times Square, originally known as Longacre Square, was established. Times Square was given its name in honour of the New York Times building, which served as the neighborhood’s focal point for many years. Times Square served as the hub of the Theater district and was a popular destination before the First World War broke out. The square was therefore a great location for billboards. The first substantial electric display billboard was erected in 1917. 11 years later, Herbert Hoover’s win in the presidential election was announced for the first time using the first operating electric sign.

Since then, billboards have grown to be such a popular tourist attraction in the neighbourhood that the zoning now mandates that the buildings have billboards on them! The Great White Way and “The Crossroads of the World” are just two of the many monikers for Times Square. Times Square New Year’s Eve celebrations are now a worldwide event  Millions of people attend the yearly New Year’s Ball Drop at Times Square as the New Year draws near thanks to the dazzling lights and electrifying excitement of the area. Since 1907, Times Square has hosted festivities to lower the ball. Over a million people descend on Times Square for the New Year’s festivities, while millions more watch from the comfort of their homes.

Possibly New York’s most well-known thoroughfare, Broadway cuts diagonally through the island of Manhattan. The Theater District, which spans roughly from West 41st to West 54th Streets (south to north) and Sixth to Eighth Avenues (east to west) and is home to a plethora of theatres of various sizes, becomes its star and namesake as it passes through the west side of Midtown. The phrase refers to a theater’s size rather than its location. A Broadway theatre is defined as having more than 499 seats and is considered a New York “playhouse.” For instance: Though it is an off-Broadway production, the extremely popular Perfect Crime is currently playing on Broadway (at 50th Street) (it is also dreadful, so ease on down the road, and skip it). For your information, a theatre with 100–499 seats is referred to as “off-Broadway,” and one with fewer than 100 is referred to as “off-off-Broadway.” The Theater District’s stretch of Broadway is known as “The Great White Way” because of its dazzling neon lighting. With the renovation of the well-known TKTS booth at Duffy Square (Broadway and 47th Street) and its red-lit steps in 2008, more neon lights joined the celebration. With affordable tickets for same-day performances, TKTS is your best buddy when it comes to New York theatre. There are now three TKTS booths: one each in Downtown Brooklyn, South Street Seaport, and Times Square. Just in case you’re nearby, the Brooklyn and Seaport locations offer the following advantages: There are fewer lineups and matinee tickets are available the day before the performance. When waiting in line at TKTS, you used to see locals holding theatre lists cut out of the back of New York magazine. Unfortunately, New York no longer publishes listings. Instead, those in the know use the TKTS app, which provides a list of the shows that are currently “up” (or available) at the booth. As tickets are sold throughout the day, the availability changes, and more tickets can become available as the concert gets closer. Long-running productions like Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, and Chicago are frequently a safe bet to be up on TKTS. Counting on a concert being available on the day you want to see it could be an unrealistic dream, and waiting until closer to the show time for fresh tickets to come is an even bigger bet. So, if you’re keen on seeing a specific concert, spend the full amount, sit back, and take it all in.
